Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has expressed his support for US President-Elect Donald Trump's decision not to ban the Chinese social media app TikTok. Musk believes that banning TikTok would go against the principle of freedom of speech. However, he pointed out an imbalance, noting that while TikTok is allowed to operate in the US, the platform X is banned in China. Musk stated, "I have been against a TikTok ban for a long time, because it goes against freedom of speech. That said, the current situation where TikTok is allowed to operate in America, but X is not allowed to operate in China is unbalanced. Something needs to change."
Earlier, on April 19, Musk had also opposed the TikTok ban, even though it could have benefited X. He said, "In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform. Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for."
Trump's Conditions for TikTok
President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would approve TikTok on the condition that the USA owns 50% of the app to protect American jobs and prevent business from going to China. TikTok expressed gratitude to Trump for providing clarity and assurance, confirming that it is working to restore service in the US after a temporary halt due to a previous ban order.
Speaking at the Make America Great Again (MAGA) Victory Rally, Trump emphasized the "Trump Effect," claiming it has led to unexpected positive results even before he takes office. He stated, "We need to save TikTok because we have to save a lot of jobs. We don't want to give our business to China... I agreed to approve TikTok on the condition that the USA will own 50 per cent of TikTok..." Trump also promised to restore patriotism in schools and remove radical ideologies from the military and government.
