Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed 141 bus shelters as part of a larger plan to install 762 shelters across the city. These modern shelters are designed to improve comfort and convenience for public transport users. The project is currently 40% complete, with full completion expected by the end of 2025.
The new shelters will serve multiple bus routes, with some accommodating over 10 routes per shelter. Once finished, they are expected to serve more than 182 million riders annually. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the new shelters reflect RTA's commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure and improving the quality of life for Dubai's residents and visitors.
Al Tayer stated, "This project underscores RTA's dedication to advancing development initiatives across Dubai, addressing urban expansion and population growth while ensuring safe, convenient, and world-class public transport services." The locations for the new shelters were chosen to meet the needs of densely populated areas and integrate with individual mobility options.
Efforts are ongoing to establish necessary infrastructure, including air-conditioned shelters, shaded outdoor areas, advertising spaces, and information screens displaying bus maps and schedules. The shelters are classified into four levels based on daily usage, and they comply with the Dubai Code for People of Determination, supporting the "My Community... A City for Everyone" initiative by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
RTA stands for Roads and Transport Authority. It is the government agency in Dubai responsible for planning and providing the requirements of transport, roads, and traffic in the city.
Bus shelters are small structures where people can wait for buses. They usually have a roof and sometimes seats to protect people from the sun and rain while they wait.
