Donald Trump Discusses Greenland Acquisition Amidst Controversy

On January 8, US President-elect Donald Trump held a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence, where he did not rule out using military force to bring Greenland under US control. This statement coincided with his son, Donald Trump Jr.'s visit to Greenland, described as private. Trump emphasized the importance of Greenland and the Panama Canal for US economic security, stating he could not assure against military or economic coercion.

In a social media post, Trump expressed that Greenlanders are supportive of his 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA) campaign. He mentioned that Greenland would benefit greatly if it became part of the US, promising protection and prosperity. A video shared by Trump Jr. showed a man in a MAGA hat suggesting, "Buy us. Buy Greenland."

Trump's comments follow a December post where he claimed US ownership of Greenland is crucial for national security. However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen opposed these plans, emphasizing that Greenland's future should be determined by its people. Greenland, the world's largest island not a continent, is part of Denmark but has its own local government.
