Sikyong Penpa Tsering Discusses Tibet Earthquake and Environmental Concerns
In Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, a Tibetan politician in India, expressed concerns about the lack of international media coverage on the recent earthquake in Tibet. The disaster has resulted in 126 deaths, 188 injuries, and displaced over 30,000 people. Tsering highlighted the difficulty in confirming reports as only Chinese media is allowed to cover the event.
Tsering mentioned that a special prayer was organized for the affected individuals, although communication with those in Tibet remains challenging. He noted that local Tibetans are coming together to provide necessary supplies.
He criticized the Chinese government's poverty alleviation efforts, pointing out that many houses that collapsed were old, indicating insufficient infrastructure improvements. Tsering also warned about the environmental risks of China's planned mega-dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river, emphasizing the seismic activity in the region and potential catastrophic impacts.
