Delhi’s Green War Room: Gopal Rai Launches New Plan to Fight Pollution

New Delhi, September 30 – Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has launched the Green War Room at the Delhi Secretariat to better implement the Winter Action Plan against pollution. He highlighted that due to the Delhi government’s efforts, pollution has significantly decreased, with the number of polluted days dropping from 243 in 2016 to 159 in 2023, a 34.6% reduction.

Winter Challenges

Rai explained that winter brings unfavorable conditions for Delhi’s environment, including lower wind speeds, less rain, and falling temperatures, which cause pollution levels to rise. The Green War Room will use drone mapping, real-time data analysis, and satellite data to monitor and combat pollution.

Public Participation

The Green Delhi app connects the entire city to the Green War Room, allowing residents to report pollution-causing activities. Rai encouraged everyone to download the app and join the fight against pollution, emphasizing the theme, ‘Milkar Chalen, Pradooshan se Laden’ (Let’s fight pollution together).

Monitoring and Action

The Green War Room will focus on monitoring pollution hotspots, which significantly impact Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI). An 8-member team of environmental engineers and experts will analyze data from 24-hour monitoring stations and resolve complaints from various departments, including MCD, PWD, and Delhi Police.

Success and Future Plans

Rai noted the success of the Green Delhi app, with 88% of 80,473 complaints resolved. He expressed confidence that the Green War Room would play a crucial role in the ongoing campaign against pollution. The Delhi Government’s Winter Action Plan, announced on September 25, is already in motion, and a ‘Harit Kalash Yatra’ will be held in Connaught Place on October 1 to promote public awareness and develop green areas in Delhi.
