New Delhi [India], August 23: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Virendra Sachdeva has stated that the primary reason for the waterlogging problem in Delhi is the corruption of former Water Ministers Saurabh Bhardwaj and Satyendar Jain. He claims they sought financial benefits from every departmental work.
On Friday, Sachdeva highlighted that the entire city is struggling with waterlogging, with areas like Kirari, Sangam Vihar, and Burari permanently affected. Even upscale areas like Rohini, Rajendra Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Kamla Nagar are severely impacted. Near the Old Delhi Railway Station, a sewer barrel collapsed, but no orders for repairs or major cleaning were issued.
According to Sachdeva, current Water Board Minister Atishi has been blaming officials instead of taking action. She accused various officials of not working at the behest of BJP leaders. Sachdeva mentioned that the Delhi BJP has been exposing the Kejriwal government's failures through protests over waterlogging. Due to public pressure, Atishi consulted with officials and understood the situation.
Sachdeva explained that on June 5, 2020, Satyendar Jain, and on July 21, 2023, Saurabh Bhardwaj issued orders that no official could issue a work order worth even 100 rupees without the approval of the departmental minister. This led to a breakdown in the Water Board's maintenance services for the past year. After these orders were exposed, Atishi annulled them on August 22, 2024.
Sachdeva stated that this annulment indicates that Atishi now knows that Bhardwaj and Jain's corruption is responsible for the waterlogging disaster and the nearly 35 deaths. He added that before July 2023, officers were authorized to carry out maintenance work up to certain amounts, but Bhardwaj's order halted all maintenance work this year, leading to severe waterlogging.
Sachdeva concluded by saying that Bhardwaj, still a minister in Delhi, should resign immediately as he is responsible for the waterlogging crisis.
BJP stands for Bharatiya Janata Party. It is one of the major political parties in India.
Virendra Sachdeva is the President of the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Waterlogging happens when water accumulates in an area, usually due to heavy rain, and doesn't drain away quickly. This can cause problems like flooding and damage to property.
Water Ministers are government officials responsible for managing water resources and services in a region. In this case, Saurabh Bhardwaj and Satyendar Jain were former Water Ministers of Delhi.
Corruption means dishonest or illegal behavior, especially by powerful people like government officials. It can involve taking bribes or misusing public resources.
Restrictive orders are rules or commands that limit or stop certain activities. In this context, they halted maintenance work that could have prevented waterlogging.
Atishi is the current Water Board Minister in Delhi. She is responsible for managing water-related issues in the city.
Resignation means giving up a job or position. In this case, Virendra Sachdeva is asking Saurabh Bhardwaj to quit his position because of the waterlogging issues.
Annulment means officially canceling or invalidating something. Here, it refers to Atishi canceling the previous orders that were blamed for causing waterlogging.
