Cypriot Court Rejects Appeal in Israeli-Cypriot Property Dispute
A Cypriot court has dismissed an appeal by Simon Mistriel Aykut, a 74-year-old Israeli-Turkish property developer, in a case affecting Israeli-Cypriot relations. Aykut is accused of selling properties worth EUR43 million belonging to Greek Cypriots in Turkish-occupied Northern Cyprus. The Supreme Court of Cyprus rejected his pleas, stating it could not review the case's merits until the trial concludes. Aykut faces 242 charges, including fraudulent transactions and money laundering. The properties are located in Famagusta and Kyrenia Districts. He was arrested in June while entering the Republic of Cyprus from Northern Cyprus. The issue of illegal property exploitation in Northern Cyprus is a significant concern in Cypriot-Israeli relations, raised by Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel's Foreign Ministry advises its citizens to follow Cyprus's directives. The Turkish army's 1974 invasion of Northern Cyprus displaced many Greek Cypriots, and the international community does not recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
