The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has announced a new campaign called "Bangladeshi Goods, Quit India" in response to the reported attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. This campaign will start next week at the Kashmiri Gate Market in Delhi and will spread to over 100 markets across the city.
Vinay Narang, president of the auto parts market association at Kashmiri Gate, stated that all business dealings with Bangladesh have been suspended for a month. Brijesh Goyal, chairman of CTI, and president Subhash Khandelwal expressed the business community's anger over the situation.
The CTI has urged the Indian government to take economic measures to pressure Bangladesh into stopping these attacks. They warned that if the situation continues, traders across Delhi and India would halt all trade with Bangladesh.
In 2023-24, India and Bangladesh conducted trade worth over Rs 1.18 lakh crore, with India exporting goods valued at Rs 13.8 billion to Bangladesh. Despite this, the CTI has decided to suspend all trade with Bangladesh for a month.
Brijesh Goyal compared this move to India's economic boycott of China, which he claimed led to a resolution of border disputes. He emphasized the need for similar economic pressure on Bangladesh to end the attacks on Hindus.
CTI stands for Chamber of Trade and Industry. It is an organization that represents businesses and traders, helping them with trade-related issues.
This is a campaign started by CTI to stop buying and selling products from Bangladesh in India. It is a way to protest against attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
Kashmiri Gate Market is a well-known market in Delhi, India. It is famous for selling various goods and is a starting point for the campaign.
Economic pressure means using financial actions, like stopping trade, to influence another country's behavior. In this case, CTI wants India to use economic pressure on Bangladesh.
India-Bangladesh trade refers to the buying and selling of goods between India and Bangladesh. In 2023-24, this trade was worth over Rs 1.18 lakh crore, which is a huge amount of money.
An economic boycott of China means stopping trade with China to protest or show disagreement. CTI is comparing their campaign against Bangladesh to a similar action against China.
