A convoy carrying food and medical supplies to Parachinar was attacked in the Bagan area of Lower Kurram, Pakistan, on Thursday. This attack has further disrupted the delivery of essential goods to a region already suffering from severe shortages due to prolonged road blockades.
The region has been experiencing ongoing clashes due to long-standing land disputes, resulting in at least 130 deaths since November. These disputes, along with road blockages, have led to critical shortages of food and medicine in Parachinar, with roads blocked for weeks, cutting off vital supplies.
Despite a peace agreement signed on January 1, restoring full access to the key route to Parachinar has been challenging. A previous government convoy was ambushed on January 4, injuring Kurram's deputy commissioner. Efforts to stabilize the region are ongoing, with steps like dismantling bunkers in Kurram underway.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism about the situation improving after a second convoy successfully reached the district. However, Thursday's attack highlighted the region's continuing volatility. Hangu Assistant Commissioner Saeed Mannan confirmed that a convoy of 35 vehicles was attacked en route from Thall to Parachinar.
Sajid Turi, a former federal minister from Kurram, emphasized the need for safe passage of convoys and criticized the government for not consulting local jirgas. He also claimed that militants in Kurram have outside support. Local authorities are pushing to reopen access routes, but some vehicles have returned to Peshawar due to lack of progress.
Orakzai, a local jirga member, called for the reconstruction of Bagan Bazaar, destroyed in a November attack, urging its rebuilding to match Miramshah Bazaar in North Waziristan.
