Congress Criticizes PM Modi for Rahul Gandhi’s Seating at Independence Day Event
New Delhi [India], August 15: Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi sit in the fifth row during the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort. Shrinate called Modi’s actions petty and disrespectful to democratic traditions.
“It is futile to expect big things from small-minded people. Narendra Modi certainly showed his frustration by making Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi sit in the fifth row during the Independence Day celebrations, but this did not make any difference to Rahul Gandhi and he will keep raising issues of the people as he has been doing,” Supriya Shrinate said in a video statement on X.
Shrinate added that the rank of the Leader of the Opposition is equivalent to that of a cabinet minister, and noted that government ministers were seated in the first row. She also mentioned that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was assigned a seat in the fifth row but did not attend the event.
The Defence Ministry stated that the seating arrangement was made to honor Olympians, but Shrinate questioned why other government officials like Amit Shah, J P Nadda, S Jaishankar, and Nirmala Sitharaman were not moved to honor them as well.
Despite the seating controversy, Rahul Gandhi became the first Leader of the Opposition in a decade to attend the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort.
