Chunghwa Telecom has successfully restored communication between Taiwan and Lienchiang County (Matsu) after repairing the Taiwan-Matsu No. 2 undersea cable. The repair was completed with core wire-by-core wire testing and emergency repairs, allowing transmission to resume at 11:40 am on Wednesday. Previously, microwave communication was used as a temporary solution.
The No. 2 and No. 3 undersea cables were damaged due to natural deterioration. While the No. 2 cable has been repaired, work on the No. 3 cable continues. Chunghwa Telecom is coordinating with international repair ships to ensure full restoration, aiming for stable communication services for Matsu.
Chunghwa Telecom also repaired the Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) international undersea cable, which resumed normal operations after being damaged on January 3. The damage was suspected to be caused by a Chinese-operated freighter. The repair restored communication between Taiwan and countries like the US, Japan, and South Korea.
With 14 international and 10 domestic undersea cables, Taiwan relies on these for stable connectivity. Chunghwa Telecom, partly owned by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, remains committed to providing reliable communication services.
