Chinese Official Liu Jianchao Stresses Security for China-Pakistan Economic Corridor

Islamabad, Pakistan – On June 23, a high-ranking Chinese official, Liu Jianchao, emphasized the importance of security for the future of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Speaking at the third meeting of the Pakistan-China Joint Consultative Mechanism, Liu highlighted the need for better security protocols and a supportive business and media environment to ensure the project’s success.

Security Concerns

Liu Jianchao, Minister of the Central Committee of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, stated that security threats are the main hazards to CPEC cooperation. He noted that the confidence of Chinese investors is shaken by the security situation in Pakistan.

Recent Attacks

In recent years, terrorists have targeted Chinese projects in Pakistan, including CPEC. In March, the Baloch Liberation Army attempted to breach the Gwadar Port Authority complex, and a suicide bomber attacked a convoy of Chinese engineers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district, resulting in the deaths of five engineers and their local drivers.

Efforts to Improve Security

Liu praised Pakistani law enforcement agencies for their recent successes in tackling terrorism. He called for improving the business environment and addressing the reluctance of Chinese investors due to Pakistan’s financial situation and unmet commitments.

Political Support

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, expressed commitment to advancing CPEC. He highlighted the strong political consensus on CPEC, with senior representatives from all major Pakistani political parties attending the meeting. Pakistan Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani stressed the need for inclusive and sustainable growth.

Concerns and Criticisms

PTI leader Barrister Ali Zafar expressed concerns about the slow progress of CPEC and called for acceleration. Khurshid Ahmed of the Baloch Human Rights Council highlighted the negative implications of CPEC in Balochistan, stating that the projects primarily serve the interests of the oppressors.
