China Accuses Taiwan of Blocking Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions
China has accused Taiwan of hindering efforts to improve relations between the two sides, blaming the island for rejecting dialogue and increasing tensions. An official familiar with the situation stated that Taiwan's refusal to engage in talks and its strong rhetoric have led to a breakdown in exchanges. However, the official also criticized Beijing for its military activities around Taiwan, suggesting that China should not expect a warm welcome while its military continues to provoke the island.
The delay of the Twin City Forum in December was attributed to China's failure to finalize its guest list, not any obstruction from Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). China had submitted a list of over 100 attendees, with Taiwan approving over 90% of them. The few not approved were from China's Taiwan Affairs Office, which enforces Beijing's guidelines against "Taiwan independence."
Taiwan's official explained that while the MAC had sought to lift the ban on group tours to China, the guidelines made it impossible. Despite this, many Taiwanese still visit China independently, and Taiwan remains committed to fostering goodwill with Beijing. If China engages in dialogue or shows positive action, Taiwan is open to revisiting the group tour ban.
Recently, Taiwan's Ministry of Defence (MND) reported detecting 15 aircraft from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and eight vessels from the PLA Navy (PLAN) near Taiwan. The MND stated that 14 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, entering Taiwan's Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ). Taiwan's military has been closely monitoring the situation and responding accordingly.
In a related development, Taiwan's armed forces tracked a satellite launch by China, maintaining vigilance during the operation. The ongoing tension stems from Taiwan's assertion of its independence, while China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and continues to push for reunification under its "One China" policy.
