CBI Investigates Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death at RG Kar Medical College
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On Friday afternoon, the CBI team arrived with a high-accuracy 3D laser scanner to create a digital blueprint of the crime scene.
Earlier in the day, four doctors from RG Kar Medical College were summoned by the CBI for questioning about the incident. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, was also taken out of the CBI Special Crime Branch in Kolkata for a medical examination.
Meanwhile, doctors and medical students across the country intensified their protests. Junior doctors and medical students at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad and RML Hospital in Delhi staged protests demanding justice for the victim.
In Siliguri, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) called for a 12-hour general strike on Friday. The Indian Medical Association announced a nationwide withdrawal of services from 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, to 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 18.
On August 14, a mob of 5,000 to 7,000 people invaded RG Kar Hospital, attacked protesting doctors and medical students, and attempted to ransack the premises. The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community.
