The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has sentenced 15 individuals, including Becharbhai Ganeshbhai Zala, the former Branch Manager of the State Bank of Saurashtra at Naroda Road, Ahmedabad, to rigorous imprisonment ranging from 3 to 5 years. They were also fined a total of Rs 15.35 lakh for their involvement in a bank fraud case.
The case was registered by the CBI on September 11, 2001, against Zala and several private individuals. Zala, in his role as Branch Manager, was accused of conspiring to defraud the bank by approving housing loans totaling Rs 1.62 crore based on forged documents. He allegedly misused his position by not verifying the eligibility of borrowers and sanctioning loans dishonestly.
After a thorough investigation, the CBI filed nine separate chargesheets. Judgments have been pronounced in five of these cases, while charges against nine individuals were dropped due to their demise during the trial.
