Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced new measures to combat the fentanyl trade as part of Canada's Border Plan. The plan includes deploying thousands of additional frontline personnel to the border, launching a precursor chemical detection unit, and establishing a new drug profiling center. Trudeau emphasized the global and deadly nature of the drug trade and Canada's commitment to tackling it.
Trudeau's announcement follows a statement by US President Donald Trump, who highlighted a USD 1.3 billion border plan to stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States. Trump mentioned that Canada agreed to secure the Northern Border and end the influx of drugs like fentanyl. In return, Trump will pause tariffs on Canadian goods for 30 days to facilitate a potential economic deal.
Trump also noted the reinforcement of the border with new helicopters, technology, and personnel, along with enhanced coordination with American partners. He expressed satisfaction with the initial outcome and emphasized his responsibility to ensure the safety of Americans.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, US Customs and Border Protection seized 19.5 kilograms of fentanyl at the northern border last year, compared to 9,570 kilograms at the southwestern border.
