BJP Announces Election Officers for State Presidents and National Council Members
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the election officers for the upcoming elections of state presidents and national council members. Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav will oversee elections in Gujarat, Shivraj Singh Chauhan in Karnataka, Piyush Goyal in Uttar Pradesh, Manohar Lal Khattar in Bihar, and Dharmendra Pradhan in Madhya Pradesh.
The BJP is expected to elect a new National President in January 2025, with state party presidents being chosen by January 15. JP Nadda, who has been the BJP President since 2019, led the party through the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and several assembly polls. He is also a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.
The BJP is preparing for organizational elections, starting from local committees to the national level. Elections will begin with local committees, followed by mandal, district, regional, and state committees. Each elected president will nominate a team of office-bearers. Once elections in half the states are completed, a full-time national president will be elected, who will then appoint a team of office-bearers. This process takes about two months.
A BJP national president can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms of three years each. This rule was amended in 2012 when the RSS wanted Nitin Gadkari to continue as BJP chief for a second term, but Rajnath Singh replaced him. Amit Shah succeeded Singh after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, and JP Nadda has been the party chief since January 2020, currently on an extension.
