Bangladesh's Path to Democracy: Challenges and Reforms After Sheikh Hasina's Ouster
In August 2024, mass protests led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's authoritarian regime in Bangladesh. A report by Human Rights Watch titled "After the Monsoon Revolution: A Roadmap to Lasting Security Sector Reform in Bangladesh" highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms to address political repression. The report emphasizes the importance of separating powers and ensuring political neutrality in institutions like the judiciary, civil service, police, and military.
Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, stressed the need for swift reforms to maintain democratic progress. Interim government head Muhammad Yunus, appointed by student activists, has committed to key reforms, including ending extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. Six commissions have been established to address reforms in areas such as the electoral system and anti-corruption measures.
Despite progress, challenges remain. Human Rights Watch has documented abuses by security forces targeting former Awami League supporters. Over 1,000 police cases have been filed, and more than 400 former ruling party leaders face investigations. Concerns have also been raised about the treatment of journalists and minority communities.
The interim government is urged to work with the UN to ensure lasting reforms and prevent past abuses from recurring. The success of these efforts could determine Bangladesh's democratic future.
