In Dhaka, Bangladesh, Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser of the Bangladesh Interim Government, Muhammed Yunus, clarified that there are no plans to ban the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). This statement follows the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spiritual leader associated with the Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote, on sedition charges.
Alam emphasized the importance of national unity, urging political parties to unite against misinformation and groups attempting to destabilize the country. He highlighted the need for unity in the face of increasing violence against minority communities.
Local media reported that Yunus met with political parties, who assured support for national unity. Amar Bangladesh Party's Asaduzzaman Fuaad mentioned that parties urged Yunus to expedite elections after necessary reforms.
Regarding a petition to ban Indian TV channels, Alam stated that the matter is for the court to decide, affirming Bangladesh's commitment to media freedom.
Alam accused ousted leader Sheikh Hasina of being a "mass murderer," citing disappearances and killings under her regime. Hasina, in turn, accused the interim government of unlawfully seizing power and persecuting her party, the Awami League. She condemned the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das and called for his release, expressing concern over attacks on minorities.
Earlier protests against government job quotas led to Hasina's resignation and the formation of an interim government under Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
An interim government is a temporary government set up to manage a country until a new government is elected. It usually happens when there is a political crisis or change.
ISKCON stands for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It is a religious organization that follows the teachings of Lord Krishna, a Hindu deity.
Sedition charges are legal accusations against someone for actions or speech that incite people to rebel against the authority of a state or government.
National unity means people in a country coming together and working as one, especially during difficult times, to maintain peace and stability.
