Bangladesh's General Waker-Uz-Zaman Discusses Important Relationship with India
In a recent interview, Bangladesh's Chief of Army Staff, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, emphasized the significance of India as an important neighbor. He highlighted the mutual dependency between the two countries, noting that many Bangladeshis travel to India for medical treatment and that Bangladesh imports numerous goods from India.
General Zaman described the relationship as a "give and take" one, stressing the need for fairness and equality. He stated that Bangladesh aims to maintain good relations with India without feeling dominated. He assured that Bangladesh would not act against India's strategic interests and expects the same in return.
General Zaman also addressed India's request for cooperation in ensuring security in the northeast region, affirming that Bangladesh would not disrupt stability along the Myanmar border or in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
In December, India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Bangladesh, marking the first high-level visit since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office. Misri expressed India's desire to work closely with Bangladesh's interim government and addressed concerns about the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
Misri highlighted the longstanding people-centered relationship between India and Bangladesh, driven by collaboration in trade, commerce, and other areas.
