Balochistan Faces Severe Child Malnutrition Crisis

In Balochistan, Pakistan, a recent nutrition survey has revealed alarming levels of malnutrition among children. The report shows that 49.6% of children across all 36 districts are suffering from severe food insecurity. Health experts warn that malnutrition not only stunts growth and development but also weakens immune systems, making children more susceptible to diseases like measles. Many affected children have significantly lower physical development and weight compared to their peers.

Despite the ongoing nutrition emergency since 2018, the necessary funding to combat this crisis has not been provided to the relevant departments. The Nutrition Directorate is unable to implement effective strategies due to a lack of financial resources. Experts attribute the crisis to factors such as poverty, inadequate breastfeeding practices, natural disasters like floods and droughts, and persistent food shortages.

There is a growing public demand for the government to take concrete actions beyond promises to address the nutrition crisis. Immediate and effective solutions are crucial to prevent further harm to children's health in the region. UNICEF has also highlighted the crisis, noting that nearly two million children are suffering from severe wasting or acute malnutrition, with a significant risk of death due to funding shortages for life-saving therapeutic food in 12 countries, including Pakistan.
