Awami Action Committee's Fight Against Power Crisis in Gilgit-Baltistan
The Awami Action Committee (AAC) of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB), led by Chairman Ehsan Advocate, held an important meeting to tackle the ongoing power crisis in the region. The AAC praised the people of Hunza for their protest in freezing temperatures, which prompted government negotiations. Initially, a region-wide protest was planned for January 10, but it was postponed for 15 days after talks in Hunza.
The AAC warned that if power outages are not resolved, mass protests will resume. They presented demands to address the power shortage, including ending preferential power lines and ensuring fair electricity distribution. The AAC also urged the government to cut spending on bureaucratic privileges, like the 7,000 official vehicles, and redirect funds to buy thermal generators.
For long-term solutions, the AAC emphasized the need to expedite funding for key power projects, such as the Attabad, Henzel, and Naltar hydropower plants. They called for accountability and penalties for contractors delaying these projects. The AAC remains committed to advocating for PoGB residents, urging swift government action to resolve the power crisis.
