In a significant development, Australia and India have signed an arrangement to allow air-to-air refuelling between the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Indian Armed Forces. This agreement was announced by Australia's Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, Pat Conroy, and India's Minister for Defence, Rajnath Singh, during bilateral discussions.
The arrangement enables RAAF's KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft to refuel Indian Armed Forces aircraft. The Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Harvey Reynolds, signed the agreement in Delhi during the Australia-India Air Staff Talks.
Reynolds highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating that it enhances the defence relationship between the two nations. He emphasized that India is a key security partner for Australia, and this cooperation contributes to stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The agreement also opens up opportunities for personnel from both countries to work closely, share knowledge, and build trust. Additionally, RAAF conducts training with Indian Navy P-81 Neptune surveillance aircraft, and this arrangement is a step towards refuelling the P-81, enhancing India's capabilities in the region.
Rajnath Singh met with Pat Conroy on the sidelines of the ADMM Plus forum, expressing satisfaction with the progress in defence partnerships and looking forward to further engagements. Singh also attended the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus forum, advocating for a rule-based international order in the Indo-Pacific.
Air-to-air refuelling is a process where one aircraft refuels another while flying in the sky. This helps military planes stay in the air longer without needing to land for fuel.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the air force branch of Australia's military. They are responsible for defending Australia from threats in the air.
The KC-30A is a type of aircraft used by the Royal Australian Air Force for refuelling other planes in the air. It carries extra fuel and has special equipment to transfer it to other aircraft.
The Indo-Pacific is a region that includes the Indian Ocean and the western and central Pacific Ocean. It is important for trade and security, and many countries work together to keep it safe.
The P-81 is a type of aircraft used by the Indian Navy for maritime patrol. It helps in monitoring the seas and protecting India's waters.
