On November 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at a Special Session of the Guyanese Parliament in Georgetown, Guyana. He emphasized that India has never pursued expansionism or resource-capturing, advocating instead for universal cooperation in areas like space and sea. Modi stated, "This is not the time for conflict but to identify and remove conditions that create conflicts."
PM Modi highlighted the importance of 'democracy first and humanity first' as the best approach to tackle global challenges. He explained that democracy involves taking everyone along for development, while humanity guides decision-making for the benefit of all. Modi remarked, "For the formation of an inclusive society, there is no bigger medium than democracy."
Modi noted the deep historical ties between India and Guyana, dating back 180 years. He acknowledged the shared struggles of both nations over the past 200-250 years and celebrated their joint efforts in strengthening democracy worldwide. Modi's visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in over 50 years, coinciding with the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.
The Guyanese Parliament is the place where the leaders of Guyana, a country in South America, meet to make important decisions and laws for their country.
Expansionism is when a country tries to grow bigger by taking over more land or resources, often from other countries. It is like when someone tries to take more than what is fair or theirs.
Resource-capturing means taking control of natural resources like water, minerals, or forests, often from other places, sometimes without permission or fairness.
Universal cooperation means working together with everyone around the world to solve problems and make things better for all people, no matter where they live.
The India-CARICOM Summit is a meeting between India and CARICOM, which is a group of 15 Caribbean countries, to discuss and improve their relationships and work together on common issues.
