Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces New Law for University Security Clearance
Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that his government will introduce a new law requiring compulsory security clearance for opening universities in the state.
New Law for University Security Clearance
Chief Minister Sarma stated that some institutions from Kerala are interested in opening universities in the Muslim-majority areas of Assam. He criticized the previous Congress policies for easily allowing any wealthy institution to open a university without security checks. The new act will make it mandatory to get security clearance for opening nursing colleges, medical colleges, and dental colleges.
“There was no security clearance in our system, and the acts were formed by Congress, but there was no provision for getting security clearance. We will bring this clause to Assam also, and it will take 2-3 months to bring it,” Sarma explained.
Background Checks and Security Concerns
Sarma mentioned that some universities from Kerala are trying to open institutions in Barak Valley and Barpeta. Upon checking their backgrounds, they were found to be suspicious. “But there is no provision for checking in Assam. That's why we will bring security clearance provision,” he added.
University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM)
Regarding the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), Sarma noted that the Meghalaya government has decided not to defend USTM University, which is located in their state. However, Assam Congress leaders are defending this entity, which Sarma claims is contributing to flash floods in Guwahati.
