Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Urges Safety Amid Heavy Rain in Guwahati
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked everyone to stay indoors following heavy rain in Guwahati. He posted on X, advising people to avoid using vehicles unless necessary and to steer clear of downtown hospital areas on GS Road.
From 2019 to July 2023, 880 people have died due to floods in Assam, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Minister of State of Home Affairs Nityanand Rai shared this information in response to a question by MP Sushmita Dev in Rajya Sabha. The National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organisation have created a flood hazard atlas for Assam using satellite data from 1998 to 2023.
This year, floods have also claimed the lives of 215 animals in Kaziranga National Park, including 13 one-horned rhinos. Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park, reported that the animals drowned in floodwaters.
