Antony Blinken Announces Additional Aid for Sudan
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced an additional $200 million in aid to Sudan during a United Nations Security Council meeting. This brings the total US support to over $2.3 billion since the conflict began in April 2023.
Conflict in Sudan
The conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RPF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces has severely impacted Sudan's transition to democracy, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis. Blinken highlighted the ongoing atrocities, including attacks on hospitals and markets, and the widespread sexual violence against women and girls.
Call for International Action
Blinken urged UN member states to increase emergency relief efforts and suggested four ways to intensify humanitarian efforts. He called for increased aid, pressure on the Sudanese Army and RPF to cease fighting, prevention of external influences exacerbating the conflict, and using resources to alleviate Sudan's suffering.
Recent Attacks
On December 16, the RPF attacked the city of el-Fasher, resulting in at least 38 deaths. The conflict, which began in April 2023, followed an army coup in 2021.
