Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the 72nd Plenary of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, urging the Chief Ministers, Governors, and people of the northeast to work towards making the region drug and addiction-free as soon as possible. He emphasized the larger goal of making all of India drug-free.
Shah highlighted the region's emergence as a major corridor for addictive drugs and called for increased efforts to combat this issue. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that every citizen in the Northeast receives their constitutional rights, including property protection and personal safety.
Shah noted the progress made in reducing violence, with a 31% decrease in violent incidents and an 86% reduction in civilian deaths over the past decade. He credited the police, army, Assam Rifles, and Central Reserve Police Force for their efforts, which have led to the surrender of over 10,000 militants and the signing of several agreements.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the start of the session, which was held at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The meeting included discussions on the growth and prosperity of the Northeast region.
