The Green Hydrogen Summit, a significant event during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, took place today, gathering global industry leaders to promote the use of green hydrogen in various sectors. The summit focused on overcoming challenges and finding innovative solutions to advance this important industry while supporting global sustainability goals.
Stephan Gobert, Chief Strategy Officer and Senior Vice President for Green Hydrogen at ENGIE, a company based in France, emphasized the strategic importance of green hydrogen production in the energy sector. He pointed out the Middle East's advantage in providing low-cost electricity, as demonstrated by recent auctions in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other regional countries, which enhances growth opportunities in this sector.
Gobert shared that ENGIE has completed its first green hydrogen plant in South Africa, currently operating at a small capacity. A second facility with a 10-megawatt capacity is under construction in Australia. The aim is to build, operate, and maintain these projects to assess their efficiency and long-term costs.
The Middle East's low renewable energy costs, supported by clear strategies and ambitions, position the region as a key player in green hydrogen. Gobert stressed the need for increased government support to achieve these goals. He also mentioned that while there are no current costs for pollution, this is expected to change, benefiting green molecule producers.
Gobert concluded by stating that the next phase will involve larger projects with capacities reaching hundreds of megawatts, eventually expanding to gigawatt-scale projects. These projects will focus on major hubs essential for advancing the industry.
Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week is an event where people from around the world come together to talk about ways to protect the environment and use energy wisely. It happens in Abu Dhabi, which is a city in the United Arab Emirates.
Green hydrogen is a type of clean fuel made using renewable energy sources like wind or solar power. It doesn't pollute the air, making it good for the environment.
ENGIE is a company that works on energy solutions, including making and using clean energy. They are involved in projects around the world to help reduce pollution and use energy more efficiently.
The Middle East has a lot of sunlight and space for solar panels, which helps produce electricity at a lower cost. This makes it a good place to develop green hydrogen projects.
A gigawatt is a unit of power that is equal to one billion watts. When projects reach gigawatt scales, it means they can produce a lot of energy, enough to power many homes and industries.
