Aaditya Thackeray Responds to Controversy Over Veer Savarkar

In Mumbai, Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray addressed the recent comments made by Congress leader and Karnataka health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Rao claimed that Veer Savarkar, a Chitpavan Brahmin, consumed beef. Thackeray emphasized the importance of focusing on the present and future rather than dwelling on the past. He stated, “I think saying these things at this point in time doesn’t make any sense. All the great people have done what they needed to and have shown us. They must be watching us – what we are doing for this country and what path we are taking. It’s better to live in present and see towards the future and how can we improve that instead of living in the past.”

Dinesh Gundu Rao’s Remarks

Earlier, Dinesh Gundu Rao spoke at a book launch for the Kannada version of “Gandhi’s Assassin: The Making of Nathuram Godse and His Idea of India” by journalist Dhirendra K. Jha. Rao commented on Savarkar’s ideology, stating it was different from Indian culture despite his nationalism. He mentioned that Savarkar was a non-vegetarian and not against cow slaughter, which contrasted with Mahatma Gandhi’s beliefs. Rao also criticized Muhammad Ali Jinnah, noting that despite being a “hardcore Islamic believer,” Jinnah ate pork and was not a fundamentalist. Rao urged awareness of the fundamentalism promoted by groups like the RSS and Hindu Mahasabha.
