Yugendra Pawar to Challenge Uncle Ajit Pawar in Baramati Elections

Yugendra Pawar, the grandson of Sharad Pawar and a candidate from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is set to make his political debut in the Maharashtra Assembly elections on November 20, 2024. He will be contesting against his uncle, Ajit Pawar, in Baramati, a seat Ajit has won seven times.

Yugendra expressed his sadness over the family contest, stating, “It is quite sad, quite unfortunate that this had to come in the family.” He emphasized the importance of staying with Sharad Pawar, the NCP founder and family patriarch, who has been a guiding force for the party.

Baramati has previously witnessed a Pawar versus Pawar contest when Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar’s daughter, defeated Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife, in the Lok Sabha polls. Ajit Pawar had split the NCP in June 2023.

Yugendra Pawar acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying, “I don’t think it will be tough but I don’t even think that it will be easy either.” He believes the people of Baramati support Sharad Pawar, as shown in previous elections.

Yugendra highlighted several issues in Baramati, including crime, unemployment, and water scarcity. He stressed the need for change in local leadership and the importance of addressing these problems.

On the reservation system, Yugendra supports the stance of Supriya Sule and the NCP, advocating for reservations for certain sections of society.

Yugendra plans to visit all villages in Baramati, following the advice of his mentor, Sharad Pawar, to connect with people in smaller communities.
