YouTube’s Exciting New Features: Playback Speed, Sleep Timer, and More
YouTube has announced several updates to improve user experience, largely based on user feedback. One of the key changes is the introduction of a finely adjustable playback speed, allowing users to modify speed in increments of 0.05, offering more control than the previous 0.25 increments. Users can still watch videos at speeds up to 2x.
Another significant update is the expansion of the sleep timer feature to all users, which was previously only available to Premium subscribers. This feature lets viewers set playback to stop after intervals of 10, 15, 20, 30, or 45 minutes, or after one hour. Users can also choose to end playback when the current video finishes.
For iOS users, improvements for browsing in landscape mode are expected later this year. The in-app mini-player has been revamped to be resizable and movable, enhancing navigation. Users can also create collaborative playlists and customize thumbnails using personal photos or generative AI tools.
YouTube is also introducing voting capabilities on videos within playlists to encourage community interaction. Badges will be available in the YouTube and YouTube Music apps, recognizing achievements like being an early paid member of a channel or completing quizzes.
To enhance the television experience, YouTube is adding a more cinematic feel with visual enhancements, including new pops of pink and other design touches. On smart TVs, videos will automatically play as teasers on channel pages, allowing viewers to preview content instantly.
