Yogesh Kathuniya Wins Silver in Men’s Discus Throw at Paris Paralympics 2024

Paris, France – Indian para-athlete Yogesh Kathuniya has won the eighth medal for Team India at the Paris Paralympics 2024. He secured a silver medal in the Men’s Discus Throw F56 final with a best throw of 42.22 meters at the Stade de France.

This is Kathuniya’s second consecutive Paralympic medal, following his silver at Tokyo 2020 where he achieved a throw of 44.58 meters. Earlier this year, he also won a silver medal in the F56 category at the World Para-Athletics Championship 2024 with a throw of 41.80 meters, finishing behind Brazilian athlete Claudiney Batista Dos Santos. Dusan Lackzo of Slovakia took the bronze.

Kathuniya also earned a silver medal in the Men’s Discus Throw F54/55/56 Final at the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou. In that event, Claudiney Batista won gold with a throw of 46.86 meters, and Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis took bronze with a throw of 41.32 meters.

India has won a total of seven more medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024, including one gold, two silvers, and four bronzes. Preeti Pal made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals in track and field events at the Paralympics or Olympics, securing a bronze in the 200m T-35 race. Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 final with a leap of 2.04 meters. Rubina earned a bronze in the P2-Women’s 10M Air Pistol SH-1 final with 211.1 points.

Avani Lekhara continued her winning streak by claiming gold in the women’s 10m air rifle final, while Mona Agarwal won bronze in the same event. Manish Narwal secured India’s first silver medal in shooting at the Paris Paralympics in the men’s P1 10m air pistol SH1 competition.

This year, India has sent its largest Paralympics contingent ever, with 84 athletes competing across 12 sports. The country aims to surpass its previous achievements from Tokyo 2020, where India won 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes.
