Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat Join Congress Ahead of Haryana Elections
The Congress party has released its first list of 31 candidates for the Haryana assembly elections. Among the candidates is former wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who will contest from Julana. Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will run from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, and state Congress chief Udai Bhan from Hodal.
In a significant boost to the party, Olympian wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat joined the Congress. Bajrang Punia was appointed as the working president of All India Kisan Congress shortly after joining.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini commented on the development, stating that everyone has their own opinion about which ideology to support. He criticized Congress for opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisions and questioned the party’s intentions behind inducting senior players.
Vinesh Phogat spoke about the ongoing fight against sexual harassment allegations involving former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. She expressed pride in joining a party that supports women and is ready to fight for justice.
The Haryana assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with the last date for filing nominations on September 12. The votes will be counted on October 8.
