World’s Largest Maritime Heritage Complex to be Built in Lothal, Gujarat

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in Lothal, Gujarat. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that this will be the largest maritime heritage complex globally.

Project Phases and Funding

The NMHC project will be completed in two phases. The Cabinet has given in-principle approval for Phases 1B and 2. Funding will come from voluntary contributions, and construction will start once resources are secured. Phase 1B’s Lighthouse Museum will be funded by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL).

Management and Development

A separate society will be formed to manage future phases, led by the Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways. Phase 1A is already underway, with over 60% completed, and is expected to finish by 2025. Phases 1A and 1B will be developed in EPC mode, while Phase 2 will use land subleasing or a public-private partnership (PPP).

Job Creation and Community Benefits

The NMHC project is expected to create around 22,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 7,000 indirect opportunities. It aims to benefit local communities, tourists, researchers, and various organizations.

Features of the NMHC

Phase 1A will include an NMHC museum with six galleries, featuring an Indian Navy & Coast Guard gallery. Phase 1B will add eight more galleries, a Lighthouse Museum, a Bagicha complex, and more. Phase 2 will feature Coastal State Pavilions, a maritime-themed eco-resort, and theme-based parks.
