World Leaders Support India for UN Security Council at UNGA79

The 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York saw many world leaders calling for changes to the UN Security Council. They want to add more permanent members, and many countries, including France, Russia, the United States, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, support India becoming a permanent member.

Support from World Leaders

India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations shared a video showing leaders backing India’s candidacy. Angola’s President Joao Lourenco said it’s urgent to reform the Security Council to give a voice to countries from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.

Chile’s President Gabriel Boric suggested setting a deadline for the reform, hoping that by the UN’s 80th birthday, the Security Council would include Brazil, India, and at least one African country.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron supported expanding the Security Council to include Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil as permanent members. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also backed Brazil and India.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for better representation, suggesting two permanent seats for Africa, one rotating seat for small island developing states, and permanent seats for Latin America and the Caribbean, along with Germany, Japan, and India.

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Portugal’s Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also supported the expansion. Micronesia’s President Wesley Simina and Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay praised India’s candidacy, with Tobgay expressing deep gratitude for India’s support.

The general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly took place from September 24 to September 30. The theme was “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
