New York, January 4: Leaders from around the world have expressed their condolences following the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations shared that tributes came from UN Chief Antonio Guterres, Philemon Yang, President of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and other diplomatic figures.
The Indian High Commission to Sri Lanka also reported tributes from Sri Lankan leaders, including Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. Dr. Singh passed away at 92 in Delhi on December 26 due to age-related issues and was cremated with full state honors on December 28.
Dr. Singh's political career was marked by significant contributions, including his role as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, where he led economic reforms that transformed India's economy. He served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, remembered for his leadership during economic challenges and efforts to modernize the economy. He was succeeded by Narendra Modi in 2014 and retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.
