Will Smeed Joins Pretoria Capitals for SA20 Season
Pretoria Capitals have announced the signing of 22-year-old English cricketer Will Smeed for the upcoming SA20 season. Smeed, born in Somerset, has chosen to focus on limited-overs cricket and has already made a name for himself by becoming the first batter to score a century in The Hundred competition in 2022. He scored an unbeaten 101 from 50 balls for Birmingham Phoenix against Southern Brave.
Smeed has gained experience in various international T20 leagues, including the Caribbean Premier League, Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20, and Abu Dhabi T10. In his T20 career, he has played 98 matches, scoring 2484 runs at an average of 26.70 and a strike rate of 152.57. He has only played one List A game for the England Lions against South Africa in 2022, where he faced his new teammate Anrich Nortje.
In other news, defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have signed England international batter Zak Crawley for SA20 Season 3. This will be Crawley’s first time playing in South Africa’s premier domestic T20 competition. Known for his aggressive ‘Bazball’ style in Test cricket, Crawley has also played in the Hobart Hurricanes in Australia and has a T20 century for Kent in England’s T20 Blast.
Crawley said, ‘I have always wanted to be a good white-ball player. I am trying to add a few other shots to my game, but I feel like it is quite suited and I have gone well in T20 cricket in the past when I have had a run at it. I am trying to add a bit more power to my game, I am working hard in the nets, trying a few different things to hopefully hit more and bigger sixes.’
