West Bengal BJP Protests Over Trainee Doctor’s Tragic Death in Kolkata
On August 14, West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers held a protest march in Kolkata. They were protesting the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Accusations Against the Government
Falguni Patra, President of West Bengal BJP Mahila Morcha, accused the Mamata Banerjee-led state government of protecting the real accused. She stated, “We are protesting here against the West Bengal Govt over the incident that took place in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The govt has done everything to protect the real accused. We want him to be arrested. Women are extremely unsafe in West Bengal.”
Union Minister’s Remarks
Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar criticized the silence of TMC MPs on the issue. He mentioned that despite being alumni of the same medical college, two TMC MPs and three MLAs have not spoken about the incident. He also alleged that a TMC MP’s nephew’s name keeps coming up in the case.
Nationwide Protests
Doctors across the nation, including in Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, protested demanding justice for the victim. They held placards with slogans like “Justice needs to be served” and “No duty without security.”
Investigation
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are investigating the case. The CBI has taken over the case following a Calcutta High Court order and has sent specialized teams from Delhi.
Current Situation
The alleged accused, Sanjoy Roy, was brought to the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Kolkata by the police. OPD services at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital remain closed as junior doctors continue their protest. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) is also continuing its nationwide shutdown of OPD services over the incident.
The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Her family has alleged that she was raped and murdered.
