Mamata Banerjee Leads the Charge

The West Bengal legislative assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution against any division of the state. This decision came on the last day of the monsoon session, with the resolution stating, “We will protect any kind of division of the State at any cost.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized, “We will not allow the partition of West Bengal.” The resolution was initially proposed by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and supported by other ministers including Aroop Biswas, Dr. Shashi Panja, and Biplab Mitra.

The BJP MLAs protested the language of the motion, which they felt implied a hidden agenda to separate North Bengal. Leader of the Opposition Subhendu Adhikari clarified that the central government’s intention was to secure a portion of the budget allocated for northeastern states, not to divide Bengal.

Adhikari proposed a simpler resolution against the division of Bengal, which Mamata Banerjee accepted. She requested the speaker to replace the earlier resolution with a new one that clearly stated all MLAs were against any division of the state. Banerjee added, “I support united Bengal and welcome the LoP’s proposal.”

Banerjee also highlighted the importance of a strong state for a strong center and expressed her support for a united India where all communities live together. She criticized the idea of including North Bengal in the Northeast Council, stating that Bengal is a gateway to both the north and south regions of India.

RSMP MLA MD Nawsad Siddiqui and Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya also spoke against the division of Bengal. Bhattacharya criticized the BJP for allegedly supporting the division of the state.

The resolution was passed under rule 185, with a substitute motion by Subhendu Adhikari added to it.
