Vinesh Phogat Retires After Disqualification at Paris Olympics
New Delhi, India – Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from wrestling following her disqualification in the 50 kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. She shared her decision in an emotional post on X, expressing her disappointment and gratitude.
Phogat had advanced to the gold medal bout by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. However, she was disqualified for breaching the weight limit before her final match against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment over Phogat’s disqualification. She confirmed that Phogat is physically and medically fine but mentally disappointed. Chief Medical Officer Dinshaw Pardiwala revealed that Phogat exceeded the weight limit by 2.7 kg and efforts were made to reduce her weight.
Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a silver medal, with a verdict expected soon.
