Vinesh Phogat Receives Hero’s Welcome in Delhi After Announcing Retirement
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat arrived in New Delhi to a warm reception at the Delhi Airport. She was accompanied by fellow wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda. Vinesh expressed her gratitude for the love and respect she received from her supporters.
Bajrang Punia praised Vinesh, saying, “She is being welcomed like a champion. The country saw Vinesh’s journey from the streets to the podium. We thank all the countrymen.” Sakshi Malik added, “What Vinesh has done for all the women and the nation is commendable. For us, she is an Olympic champion.”
Vinesh became emotional during the reception, shedding tears as she was greeted by a huge crowd. She was the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final but was disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout for being 100 grams overweight. On August 8, she announced her retirement from wrestling, stating, “Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness.”
