Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of an Olympics, received a grand welcome in Jhajjar, Haryana, after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024 for breaching the weight limit. She was greeted with garlands and flowers by family, friends, and fellow wrestlers.

Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda and her uncle Mahavir Phogat were among those who welcomed her. Vinesh’s brother Harvinder and mother Premlata expressed their happiness at her warm reception.

At Delhi Airport, a huge crowd, including wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, gathered to celebrate Vinesh’s achievements. Flower petals were showered on her as she became emotional during the event.

In Paris, Vinesh defeated Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Yui Susaki of Japan but was disqualified from the 50 kg gold medal bout for being 100 grams overweight. She appealed for a silver medal, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed her petition. On August 8, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling with an emotional message.

“Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness,” Vinesh Phogat said in her post.
