Viktor Axelsen Praises Lakshya Sen After Paris Olympics Semifinal Clash

In the Paris Olympics, Lakshya Sen faced off against reigning champion Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles semifinals. Despite a valiant effort, Lakshya lost to Axelsen with scores of 20-22 and 14-21.

Following the match, Axelsen praised the young Indian shuttler, saying, “Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favourites to win the gold.”

Axelsen added, “An amazing talent and a great guy and I wish him all the best. He was playing so well in the big parts of both games, but I managed to relax and play the right game and win the match. But all credit to him as well.”

Axelsen noted that Lakshya gave him his toughest match of the Olympics so far, attributing his win to experience. Despite being ranked lower, Lakshya matched Axelsen’s intensity and even led in both games at various points. However, Axelsen’s experience and strong comeback secured his victory.

Axelsen will now defend his Olympic gold medal against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, while Lakshya will compete for the bronze medal against Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia.

Axelsen’s win improves his record against Lakshya to 8-1. Lakshya’s sole victory against Axelsen came in the 2022 German Open semifinals. Before reaching the semifinals, Lakshya defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-Chen.
