US Urges India to Cooperate with Canada on Hardeep Singh Nijjar Investigation

US Calls for India-Canada Cooperation on Nijjar Case

The United States has described Canada’s allegations against India as “extremely serious” and has urged India to cooperate with Canada’s investigation into the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This situation has led to a diplomatic crisis between India and Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian government agents of involvement in Nijjar’s death in Canada. India has dismissed these claims as “absurd” and “politically motivated.”

In response to the allegations, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials. India retaliated by expelling six Canadian diplomats, including Canada’s Acting High Commissioner in India, Steward Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert, and First Secretary Marie Catherine Joly.

US State Department’s Stance

US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the need for India to cooperate with Canada. He stated, “We have made clear that the Canadian allegations are extremely serious and they need to be taken seriously.” Miller also highlighted the importance of cooperation between the two countries and mentioned that the US would continue to encourage this.

Despite the tensions, Miller reassured that the US-India relationship remains strong, with ongoing collaboration in various areas, including a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. He noted that the US and India have a relationship where they can discuss concerns openly and candidly.
