Washington DC, December 28: US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences on the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In an official statement, President Biden highlighted Singh's significant contributions to US-India relations and global cooperation.
"Jill and I join the people of India in grieving the loss of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," President Biden stated. He praised Singh's strategic vision and political courage, noting that the strong cooperation between the United States and India today is a result of Singh's efforts. Singh was instrumental in the US-India Civil Nuclear Agreement and the formation of the first Quad between Indo-Pacific partners.
Biden recalled his meetings with Singh during his time as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2008 and as Vice President during Singh's Official State Visit to the US in 2009. Singh also hosted Biden in New Delhi in 2013. Biden emphasized the importance of the US-India relationship, describing it as one of the most consequential in the world.
Manmohan Singh, who passed away due to age-related medical conditions, is remembered for his role in shaping India's modern economic landscape. As Finance Minister in 1991, he introduced economic liberalization reforms that opened India's economy to global markets. During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Singh strengthened India's global standing and fostered regional cooperation through initiatives like BRICS.
Singh will be cremated near Rajghat, a resting place for many prominent Indian leaders. President Biden concluded his statement by sending condolences to Singh's family and the people of India, reaffirming the vision to which Singh dedicated his life.
