US Military Destroys Houthi Missile in Yemen Amid Rising Tensions

The United States military announced that it successfully destroyed an Iranian-backed Houthi land attack cruise missile (LACM) in Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen. The missile was deemed an imminent threat to US and coalition forces, as well as merchant vessels in the region. This action was taken to ensure the safety and security of international waters.

Meanwhile, Britain’s maritime agency reported attacks on two vessels off the Yemeni coast. One ship was hit by a missile 125 nautical miles east of Aden, causing possible fire but no significant damage. Another incident involved a small explosion near a vessel 170 nautical miles southeast of Aden, with no damage or injuries reported.

These developments come amid heightened tensions in West Asia following the recent killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah military leader Faud Shukr. The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have launched numerous missile and drone attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since Israel’s invasion of Gaza last year.

In response to the escalating situation, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered additional fighter jets and Navy ships to the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group will replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to maintain a strong military presence in West Asia.
