Bangladesh’s Touhid Hossain Assures Durga Puja Celebrations Amid Political Changes
Dhaka, Bangladesh – Mohammed Touhid Hossain, the foreign affairs advisor of Bangladesh, has confirmed that worshipers can perform Durga Puja in the country. He emphasized that Durga Puja has been celebrated in Bangladesh for ages and there have been no instances when it was not held.
Hossain’s statement comes during a time of political uncertainty in Bangladesh. A month ago, a student-led movement ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after weeks of protests and clashes that resulted in over 600 deaths. Sheikh Hasina fled to India, and an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus was formed.
Minority groups in Bangladesh alleged that Hindus were attacked following the political changes. However, the interim government stated that these incidents were political rather than religious. Hossain explained that the violence occurred due to a vacuum in administration and policing issues after Sheikh Hasina’s departure. He clarified that the violence was not based on religious differences but was directed against Awami League loyalists.
Hossain also mentioned his recent meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He described the conversation as constructive, highlighting the mutual desire for good working relations between India and Bangladesh. He noted that the issue of Sheikh Hasina was not discussed during the meeting.
