On October 16, the United States conducted precision strikes on underground weapons storage facilities in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. The US Department of Defense announced that US military forces, including B-2 bombers, targeted five underground locations housing weapons used by the Houthis to attack civilian and military vessels.

The Pentagon highlighted the strikes as a demonstration of the US’s ability to target adversaries’ facilities. The use of B-2 Spirit long-range stealth bombers showcased the US’s global strike capabilities.

The Pentagon condemned the Houthis for their attacks on US and international vessels in the Red Sea, Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden, which have disrupted global commerce. The Houthis, backed by Iran, have been designated as Global Terrorists.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III stated that the strikes were directed by President Joe Biden to degrade the Houthis’ capabilities and protect US forces.
