Uproar in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Over Article 370 Resolution
In Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, a heated debate took place in the assembly on Wednesday regarding a resolution to restore Article 370. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary proposed the resolution, but it faced opposition from Sunil Sharma, the Leader of the Opposition. Earlier in the week, the newly elected assembly began its first session with a resolution opposing the revocation of Article 370, aiming to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.
PDP leader Waheed Para, representing Pulwama, introduced the resolution, which led to further uproar. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the resolution, claiming it was merely for show and lacked genuine intent. He emphasized that a serious resolution should have been discussed with the National Conference.
The restoration of Article 370 and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, along with the implementation of the autonomy resolution, were key promises in the National Conference’s election manifesto. The assembly session is set to conclude on November 8.
In the recent assembly elections, the Congress-National Conference alliance secured 49 out of 90 seats, while the BJP won 29 seats. These elections were the first since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, and Omar Abdullah was sworn in as Chief Minister on September 16.
